U.S. Veteran

Martin T. Flaherty, 91, of the Blackman Section of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014, in the home in which he was born.

He was born October 18, 1922, the youngest son of the late James and Sabina Naughton Flaherty. He was educated in the Wilkes-Barre Township School District and graduated as a member of the class of 1941. Mr. Flaherty served in the United States Army during World War II with the 42nd Cavalry Squadron of the 2nd Cavalry Group, which was part of General Patton's Third Army. He also served stateside with the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Flaherty was involved in Wilkes-Barre Township politics beginning with his election to the Wilkes-Barre Township School Board in 1955. He served in that position until the 1970 consolidation with the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. He was then elected as a Wilkes-Barre Township Commissioner. He was also elected to and served on the Wilkes-Barre Township Home Rule Committee. In 1976 he was appointed to the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board and was subsequently re-elected to a six year term in 1977 and a four year term in 1983, after which he retired from politics.

Over the years Mr. Flaherty worked as an assembly line worker with the Ford Motor Co, a maintenance foreman on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and as an Assistant Superintendent of Highways with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He retired in 1997 as a Luzerne County Property Tax Assessor.

He was a member of St. Andrew Parish (formerly St Patrick Parish), Wilkes-Barre, PA.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Flaherty was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 51 years, Dolores Danko Flaherty, on June 3, 2010; sons Donald Flaherty in 1987, and Attorney Daniel J. Flaherty, in 1994; grandson Sean Flaherty in 2012; sisters Mae Laux, Celestine Flaherty, Helen McGlynn, and Margaret Germain; brothers Leo, Joseph and James.

Surviving are sons Martin Jr. and his wife Dawn, Kingston; Kevin, Bear Creek; and a daughter, Attorney Judith M. Flaherty, Wilkes-Barre Township; grandchildren Amanda, Daniel, Shannon, Kevin Jr., Keaton, Kollin, Sarah and Thomas; five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Peter Danko, nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

In his own words, Mr. Flaherty did not measure wealth in terms of a bank statement. He measured wealth in terms of family and considered his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren his greatest assets.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. from the Lehman Family Funeral Service, Inc. 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. Andrew Parish, 316 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Interment with Military Honors will be conducted in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Friends may call Thursday, February 20, 2014, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Friday morning from 8:30 am until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a veteran's charity or other charity of the donor's choice.
