Dr. Gilbert Janauer, of Vestal NY, died on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at his son’s home in Long Eddy, NY. He was born on February 26, 1931 in Vienna, Austria, the son of Josef and Margarethe Janauer. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Vienna, Austria. Gilbert and his family came to the United States in 1962 and he worked at Clarkson College in Potsdam NY, then was a professor of chemistry at Binghamton University. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, biking, skiing and other activities. Unfortunately, he suffered a traumatic brain injury on July 31st 1988 and spent the last 25 years fighting to recover from this injury. Gilbert never recovered from his injuries, but was able to spend the last two years of his life at the home of his son.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Marianne, his son Gerald Janauer and wife Ann, as well as his brother Georg and wife Johanna living in Vienna, Austria, and his niece Susanne, nephews Michael and Andreas also living in Austria. Gilbert is also survived by his 4 grandchildren Kevin, Karen, Christine and Katie and 5 great grandchildren Vayda, Donald, Kyle, Arya and David.
There will be a memorial mass at The Family Foundation School Chapel, Chapel Hill Rd., Hancock NY on Monday, February 17th at 4PM. Burial will take place at Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve, Newfield NY at 12:00 PM on Tuesday February 18th.
