Paul George Allegra, 87 of 45 Spring St. North Adams, MA died Monday February 10, 2014 at North Adams Commons. He was born on January 25, 1927 in Ahmeek, MI to Orazio Allegra and Francesca (Ventura) Allegra Mattucci from Taormina, Italy. He moved to Rensselaer, NY at one year of age and later lived in Menands and Albany, NY. In Albany, NY he was a prizefighter, a fireman at Hook and Ladder No. 4 on Delaware Ave and a roofer for Guy Bruttell Roofing. He moved to North Adams at age 25 and worked for Morin Roofing. He was a Teamster and worked for over 25 years retiring from Petricca Construction Company as a uke and heavy equipment operator.
Paul was the past President of the Stamford Fish and Game Association in VT. He was a superior marksman and an overall skeet shooting champion, winning numerous awards throughout New England. He was an accomplished hunter and fisherman with annual trips to Iowa bird hunting and Maine for game. He had a terrific smile and was known to many as “Uncle Paul”.
He leaves his son Paul A. Allegra, Jr. of Norfolk, VA and Elaine Bushika of Springdale, ME, five grandchildren Demetrius Allegra, April (Allegra) Gonzales, Paul Allegra, Susan Allegra, and Jason Allegra and seven great grandchildren. He leaves a nephew Richard Spinosa of Albany, NY and nieces Frances (Allegra) Gullinese of Colonie, NY, Gracie (Allegra) Annello Oakes from Nassau, NY, and Barbara Canale-Schmidt, who was like a daughter to him and her husband Karl Schmidt, and several cousins. He also leaves Lori and Dennis Austin of Palm Coast, FL and Amber (DeMarsico) Birkland and her husband Josh Birkland and their children from Adams, MA, who were also like family to him.
He was predeceased by his wife Theresa (Canale) Wisher Allegra whom he married on September 2, 1967, daughters Patricia (Allegra) Milano and Susan Allegra of Albany, NY, siblings Minnie Marta, Mary Marie Spinosa Connor, Dominic Allegra, Grace Canale, Frances Allegra, Marie Allegra, his stepchildren Margaret and Dennis Wisher, and his longtime companion Virginia Gould.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be Sunday February 16 from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, CENTRAL CHAPEL 74 Marshall Street, North Adams, MA. The funeral will be on Monday February 17 at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams, MA. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.
