David L. Welch, age 66, of Valparaiso passed away peacefully Tuesday February 11, 2014 after a long illness with cancer. David is survived by loving companion and soul mate Linda Kish and his lifelong friend John Miller, Jr. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Dave” by Shelbi, Natalie, Brian, Mitzie, Johnny, Jeffrey and Jacqueline.
He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Julia (Demo) Welch and infant brother Leroy in 1943.
Dave grew up in the Glen Park section of Gary and graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1965. He was a U.S. Naval Veteran serving tours of duty in Vietnam from 1967-1969. After the Navy he returned to school and obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from Indiana University. He went on to teach in the Tri-creek school system for over 30 years mostly teaching 6th grade social studies at Lowell Middle School retiring in 2003. Dave loved to garden, but especially enjoyed all his cars; from his Rat Rod to his Porche and many in between. He was an avid reader, world traveler and absolutely loved life. He will be truly missed by many.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday February 15, 2014 at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Road Hobart, Indiana with Rev. Jeffrey C. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of services at the funeral home.
