Belinda Ann Alexander - Smith, 56, of Hammond passed away February 6, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. She was born January 19, 1958 in Hammond, to Lebirda Richmond and the late Edward Lewis Alexander.
Belinda grew up in Hammond and was a graduate of Hammond High School, Class of 1976. and a 1980 graduate of Purdue University, Lafayette. She was formerly employed by the Gary Sanitary District where she worked for many years, and later, Prompt Medical Care from 1995-2013.
Belinda, who was a woman of great faith, began her Christian walk with baptism at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities, and ended her journey at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in the Nurses Guild, until her health failed. When Belinda was not working, she served in her church community, doted on her loving family, embraced her entrepreneurial skills selling Avon and participated in charity events, especially the Hope Angels.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Lewis Alexander; maternal grandparents, Tom and Cleo Nix and paternal grandfather, Eddie Orange Alexander.
She is survived by her loving mother Lebirda Richmond; devoted son, Tyrese (Sharrell) Alexander; grandsons, Jeremiah and Josiah Alexander; loving siblings, Terry (Johnny) Mims, Eric (Debra) Alexander, Sean Edward Alexander, Kimberly (Robert) Crawley, Ivy Alexander, Carolyn (Frederick) Moore, and Jerald "Donnie" Temple; grandmother, Grace Pope Alexander; nephew, Marcus Brown and a host of nephews, nieces, friends and her life partner, Lee Henry Smith ("Achie").
Visitation will be Wednesday February 12, 2014 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church 1117 Merrill St. Hammond, Indiana from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., family hour from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service Thursday February 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the church, Reverend Herman Polk, Sr. officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Hope Angels Foundation, P.O. Box 2118, Hammond, IN 46325 or via Chase Bank.
