Gerald E. “Jack” Hartz age 83, a long-time resident of Alexandria, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014 at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 10, 1930 in Peru, the son of Arthur E. and Hazel (Schafer) Hartz. Jack retired in 1985 from Delco Remy in Anderson where he worked in production for more than 30 years. He also formerly worked at Hartz Brothers Burial Vault Company in Alexandria from the 1940’s to the early 1960’s. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1949 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jack enjoyed walking and watching sports, especially Purdue University teams and the Chicago White Sox. He was an avid automobile enthusiast, and thoroughly enjoyed growing tomatoes every year. Jack especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Jack’s surviving family members include a sister, Jean Kendal of Alexandria; 7 nieces and nephews, Sandra Grant of Gas City, Dennis Kendal of Fayetteville, NC, Connie Johnson of Yorktown, Cathy (husband Robert) Tiernan of Noblesville, Vicki Blake of Noblesville, Gregory (wife Taree) Hartz of Youngstown, OH, and Donna (husband Robert) Osborne of Savannah, GA; 13 great- nieces and nephews; and 9 great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arthur Hartz, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Raymond Kendal.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Copher-Felser-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Margie Vandergraff, Chaplain of St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospice officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and V.F.W. Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospice through the funeral home. Online condolences to the family may be made at
