LINCOLN - Joan Reardon Kirkpatrick, 71, passed away Feb. 6, 2014, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, Mass. She was surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren when she passed. Joan was born Oct. 17, 1942, in Glen Cove, N.Y., to Thomas J. Reardon and Catherine B. Reardon.She graduated from St. Dominic's School in 1960. In 1964, she graduated from Salve Regina University with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing; and in 1966, she graduated from New York University with a Master's of Science in Nursing. She began her career as a nurse and a nurse instructor in New York and New Jersey. In 1983, she moved with her family to Lincoln where she joined the staff of Penobscot Valley Hospital. For the next 30 years, she worked in a variety of nursing positions and loved all of them. Her time spent assisting patients in the ER and the ambulance was particularly rewarding. In addition to her long career as a nurse, Joan was a member of the Workman's Compensation Board, and was a Democratic committeewoman and charter member of Penobscot Valley's AFT. She was also involved in the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Daughters of Isabella, AFL-CIO and several other organizations.Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, David Kirkpatrick; her children and their spouses, Matthew Kirkpatrick and his wife, Paula, of Eddington, Mary Hernandez and her husband, Omar, of Bergenfield, N.J., Sarah Calla and her husband, Michael, of Methuen, Mass., Naomi Thompson and her husband, Sean, of Salem, N.H., and Edward Kirkpatrick and his wife, Lillian, of Chicago; her siblings, Catherine V. Reardon of Oyster Bay, N.Y., Mary Meyers and her husband, Harry, of Locust Valley, N.Y., Alice Casey and her husband, Thomas Casey, Sr. of York Beach, and Maryann Reardon of Oyster Bay, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Grace Kirkpatrick, Rebecca and Sebastian Hernandez, Caroline and Joseph Calla, Tyler and Nathan Thompson. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Catherine B. Reardon and Thomas J. Reardon; her brother, Thomas Reardon; and her sister-in-law, Diane Holzwarth.Memorials may be given in her honor to one of the following charities: Daughters of Isabella Scholarship Book Fund, care of Susan Bailey, P.O. Box 98, West Enfield, ME, 04493; or Salve Regina University for the Nursing Alumni Scholarship, 100 Ochre Point Ave., Newport, RI 02840. The family of Joan Reardon Kirkpatrick wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all those who assisted in her care including the doctors, nurses and staff at the Women's Health Gynecologic Oncology Group, the Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical, the EMMC Radiation and Oncology Group and the Merrimack Valley Hospice House. Her family would like to extend a special thanks to Joan's colleagues at the Penobscot Valley Hospital for their extraordinary care. Joan will be waked 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at St. Mary's of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lincoln. Joan delivered babies, saved countless lives and mentored numerous health care professionals. She was a remarkable woman with tremendous skill and even greater compassion. She was a great nurse, teacher and friend. She will be missed. Her family would like to thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers and support as she battled cancer for the past seven years. While we will all miss her dearly, there is no doubt that she is with angels.
