Alma Lee Walker Baskerville

Mrs. Alma Lee Walker Baskerville was called to her eternal rest on February 1, 2014. She was at her chosen home being attended by her devoted care giver and niece-in-law, Esther. Her nephew Sam was close by, as always, rendering help at the time of her passing. She was educated in the Mecklenburg County School System. Alma Lee married her childhood sweetheart, the late John “Bootcee” Baskerville. They lived in Newark, NJ for many years. She was a domestic worker, when she retired they moved back to South Hill to live. Alma Lee worked for some time in food service for the Mecklenburg County School System. She was a talented woman who enjoyed singing and playing the piano. She joined Gethsemane Baptist Church and played the piano for the Senior Choir for many years. Her later days were spent enjoying the visits of her nieces and nephews. She was known to be the neighborhood watch person. She stood in her window and watched the people come and go in her neighborhood. Alma Lee’s favorite sayings were “be careful what you throw out there because it will come right back to you” and ”I must have done something right cause my sweet Lord Jesus gave me a good mind and the good senses to take care of myself”. She had become too weak to walk and needed constant attention. Her appetite was generally good. When she saw the food coming she would clap her hands and praise God for her food and Esther who cooked good meals for her. She would constantly tell others how much she appreciated her nephews Jay Bird and Bobby, Jr. who both brought her oil. Many times she counted on them to get her through the winter. Being 96 years young, Alma Lee found joy in just sleeping and having good dreams. She would tell you who she saw and what went on in those dreams. Many days she cried because she wanted to go be with the Lord and her family. She never failed to tell those around her that she loved them. On the very day she went home to be with the Lord, she thanked Esther and told her she loved her for taking her in and taking such good care of her. Alma Lee was born on October 24, 1017. She was the last surviving child of the late Lucinda and Sam Walker. She was preceded in death by her loving sisters: Pearl Austin, Laura Dale Baskerville, Elsie Mae Jones and brothers: Robert Allen, Herman, Samuel, Jr. and John Gilbert Walker. She leaves to cherish her memories a sister-in-law Charlotte Walker of Newark, New Jersey; devoted nephews Melvin “Jaybird” Baskerville and Bobby Walker, Jr. of New Jersey and Samuel Jones, Jr. of South Hill, VA, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, cousins and special friends Esther Baskerville and Louise Jones.
