Jerald Duane Nicol

Jerald D. “Jerry” Nicol, 69, of Oelwein, Iowa died on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Visitation: 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the funeral home. Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the City of Oelwein Youth Recreation Program. Jerald Duane Nicol was born on June 9, 1944 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Milton Howard & Bernece I. (Dooley) Nicol. He graduated in the Oelwein Community High School Class of 1962. Jerry worked as a news director at a radio station in Clinton, Iowa until he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He then received his B.A. and Masters Degree in Physical Education from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Jerry taught for three years at Carroll, Iowa and was later a recreational therapist at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for seven years. He was then a commercial bus driver for over 20 years, the last 17 years at Arrow Stage Lines of Phoenix, Arizona, retiring in 2006. Jerry made frequent trips between Oelwein and Arizona and spent his summers in Oelwein following his retirement. Jerry enjoyed golf, fishing and going to casinos. He enjoyed sports and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Jerry is survived by his companion: Mary E. “Betty” Andre of Mesa, Arizona, and Mary’s 3 Sons: Michael (Melinda) Andre of Baltimore, Maryland, Rick (Sue) Andre of Sarasota, Florida & David Andre of Congress, Arizona.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Gerald as an infant and Ronald.
