Petra (Peggy) Valdez

Petra (Peggy) S. Valdez, 89, of Saint Petersburg, Florida, formerly of Owosso, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Northside Hospital, St. Petersburg. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass in celebration of her life will take place at 10 AM, Saturday, May 31, 2014, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Owosso with Fr. Michael O'Brien, celebrant.

Petra was born May 13, 1924, in New Braunfels, Texas, the daughter of Jorge and Juanita Martinez. On December 28, 1943, she married Hector Valdez in Laredo, Texas. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1973. They moved from Texas to the Oakley area in 1946 where they lived for 9 years. They then moved their family to the Owosso area, where they resided for the remaining years of their married life until Hector's death.

Petra was first and foremost a loving and devoted wife and mother to her husband and children. She began employment with General Motors Chevrolet Plant 6 in Flint in 1953, where she remained working for almost 30 years. She and her husband were active members of St. Paul Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Peggy was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Guild.

In November of 1990, Petra married William Read in Florida, where they shared many happy years together at their home in St. Petersburg, sharing their time with family and friends between Florida and Michigan. William predeceased her in 2003.

Peggy loved family get-togethers, gardening, traveling, bingo, the casino, card games, crossword puzzles and the company of her many dear friends over the years. She had a love of life and was a pure joy to be around and an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, with whom she shared a special bond with each and every one. She made it a priority her entire life to spend quality time with each one whenever possible.

Petra is survived by her children, Hector (Darlene) Valdez, John Valdez and Rose Valdez-Kyes; step-children, Charlotte, William Jr. and Barbara; 10 grandchildren, Jamee (Rob) Welch, Crissy (Don) Uhlenkott, Manny Valdez, Chantel (Gary) Crugher, Vincent Valdez, Jacy (Jeff) Erb, Shelbi Woodfin, Robert Kyes, Ryan (Erin) Jankovic and Kara (Steven) Sobak; 10 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Macy, Alex, Gary, Marena, Lilly, Brayden, Leighton, Spencer and Carson; sister, Maria Morales; special nephew, Alex (Patty) Ramirez and many other dear nieces and family.

Memorial contributions in Petra's name are suggested to Catholic Charities of Owosso or St. Paul Catholic Church.
