Helen Fitzgerald

Helen "Bella" Fitzgerald of Newport, RI passed away peacefully on January 29th, 2014 at The Grand Islander Center, in Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late retired Newport firefighter Timothy F. Fitzgerald.

Born on October 13, 1928 in Newport, RI, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Stella McMahon. She was the sister of Jacqueline Armstrong of California and the late Estelle Gallagher of California.

A long time parishioner of St. Augustin Church, she was a devoted Catholic, and a true patriot, Helen had a deep love for Newport, and never forgot her Irish heritage. Her annual 4th of July gathering celebrated her true American spirit, and will forever be cherished. Helen's wit, intellect, and passion for politics made her the center of spirited conversation.

Helen is survived by her four children and their spouses, Timothy Fitzgerald and wife Kathy of Narragansett, RI, Susan Greene and husband Joseph of Virginia Beach, VA, Clare Garcia and husband Peter of Newport, R.I. and Cathy Moore and husband William of Napa, CA. She was predeceased by her son, Andrew and is survived by his wife, Mary Martin Fitzgerald. She has 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We are most grateful for the exceptional care by the Grand Islander Nursing Home.

Visiting hours will take place on Monday, February 3rd, 2014 from 4-7 pm at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, February, 4th at St. Augustin's Church, corner of Carroll and Harrison Avenues in Newport.
