Gail Theresa Godek Harwood, 62, became an angel peacefully at home on January 17, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Blythe, California on November 22, 1951, Gail was raised in Bennington, Vermont and had been a resident of Hoosick Falls, New York for the past 25 years. She received her education in Bennington beginning at the Cora B. Whitney School and graduated from MAUHS in 1969 before receiving her degree in education from MCLA in 1973. She found joy and fulfillment in working with the children and families of Bennington as a teacher and many fond memories of the colleagues whom she was lucky enough to work side by side over the past 40 years. Gail learned unconditional love from her amazing mother the late Catherine Congdon Godek, and was also the daughter of John William Godek who survives. She was happily married for 43 years to the most kind and loving husband, James Kennedy Harwood. She leaves behind two phenomenal daughters, Melissa Harwood Senecal and Meaghan Mulqueen Harwood, as well as her favorite son-in-law Christopher Senecal and cherished granddaughter Catherine Eleanor Senecal. She gained a great deal of joy and laughter from an extended family that included her caring sister Patricia (Mark) Chamberlin, brother John (Joanne) Godek, step-mother Clare Godek, father-in-law John Harwood and his wife Ann, sisters-in-law Anna Harwood and Bonnie (Joe) Benkoski, and brother-in-law John (Joanne) Harwood. Gail was thankful for the guidance and support of many grandparents who predeceased her including Alice Anita Mulqueen and William Congdon and Julia and William Godek. She also had many wonderful uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gail had an amazing group of friends that supported, guided, and had many great times together. She was grateful for all the memories they created from the comfort of her living room to the beaches of York, Maine. Mrs. Harwood was a member of AAUW (American Association of University Women), DKG (Delta Kappa Gamma), and the Committee for Bennington’s Relay for Life. Later in life she started running and took great joy in being part of the women’s marathon training group, Running for More, completing three marathons and many half-marathons. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 with calling hours beginning at 10 am and a spiritual service beginning at 1 pm; at Mahar and Son Funeral Home. Following the services, all are invited to the Elks Club to celebrate her life, share memories, laugh, and have a great time. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made to the Patient Resource Fund at the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center.
