Joseph Edward Carr, 87, of Bleinheim Newport, Middletown, died Sunday, January 26, 2014, in Middletown. He was the husband of Louise J. (Tubley) Carr. Born in Newport on June 1, 1926. He was a son of the late Raymond H. and Irene (Diggles) Carr.

Joe graduated from De La Salle Academy in 1947. Before graduation he served in the Navy during World War II from 1944-1946. He graduated from Boston College, where he played varsity football, in 1952. In 1961 he received his Masters degree from Rhode Island College. Joe was a member of the Dennis E. Collins Ancient Order of Hibernians and a long time parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Newport. He was also inducted to Newport Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

Joe was school teacher in the Newport School System from 1954 to 1968. He then became principal in 1968 at Callendar School, Carey and Coggeshall Schools, retiring in 1985.

Besides his wife Louise of 63 years, he is survived by his children, Daniel R. Carr and wife Rachel of Tiverton, RI, Patrick T. Carr and his wife Maureen of Tiverton, Michael D. Carr and his wife Geri of West Warwick, Timothy J. Carr and his wife Catherine of Portsmouth, Lisa M. Carr of Newport, Linda L. Carr of Middletown, RI, Susan A. Perry and her husband Andrew of Del Ray Beach, FL, his sister Dorothy Quinn of Newport, his sister-in-law Helen Carr of Newport, 15 grandchildren, 22 Great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He was the brother of the late Robert F. Carr and Raymond H. Carr and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 4-6pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue Newport at 10am. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe’s memory the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840 or to Child and Family Services, 19 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842
