Derrell Wayne Sorrells longtime resident of Rule, Texas passed away late Wednesday evening, January 15, 2014. Mr. Sorrells was 75. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Primitive Baptist Church in Rule with Dale Turner and John Greeson officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the services at Rule Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Friday evening, January 17 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Rule located at 600 Robins Avenue.
Derrell was born January 25, 1938 in Knox County to Anita Florene (Lewis) and Jesse Earl Sorrells. He married Amy Lee Cook in Rule, Texas on April 27, 1958. Over 60 years, Rule has been honored with the presence of Derrell and his loyalty to the community. He received Rule Outstanding Man of the Year in 1969 and 2010; accepted the Masonic Community Builder Award; served as a city councilman; a member of the fire department for 45 years and fulfilled the position of Fire Chief and Fire Marshall during that time; held the title of President and Vice President for the Chamber of Commerce; not to mention the activities of Rotary, Cub Scouts and Little League that he donated his enthusiasm and time to. Mr. Sorrells was a committed member of the Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a faithful Deacon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Earl and Anita Florene Sorrells; a brother, Jimmy Sorrells; and a granddaughter, Erika Sanders.
Derrell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Amy sorrels; daughter, Cynthia Steffield and husband Kent; 3 sons, Tommy Sorrells and wife Twyla, Jeffrey Sorrells and wife Teresa, and Clayton Sorrells and wife Darla; grandchildren, Lukas Sorrells, Levi Sorrells, Tabitha Sorrells, Lydia Sorrells, Eli Sorrells, Caleb Sorrells, Eve Sorrells, Stacie Sorrells, Kaycie and Cody Griffith, Jaycie Sorrells, Amanda Mitchell, Stepfani Mitchell, Justin and Denis Sanders, DJ and Stephanie Hall, Marty and Britany Hall; great-grandchildren, Tori Sanders, Ryne Sanders, Gracie Terwillager, Joslyn Brown, Fabian and Bella, and Abigail Hall.
Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Sorrells are his grandsons, Lukas, Levi, Caleb, Eli, Marty, and Justin.
