Robert Nelson James, 87, passed away January 7, 2014 in Canon City, CO. He was born July 9, 1926 in Grand Junction, Colorado to John and Ruby (Ennis) James. In 1943, Robert answered his country’s call and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII serving in the submarine division. During this time, his submarine was torpedoed by the Japanese. He was captured and detained in a Japanese P.O.W. camp for the remainder of the war. Robert married Vina McGee in 1959 and spent 55 years working as a truck driver and mechanic. He worked for Don Ward Trucking and Alan Hood before retiring. Robert was a big believer in Alcoholic Anonymous and spent many years volunteering for the organization. This work included being a sponsor; assisting veteran’s coming back from Iraq as well as inmates in the local prisons. He never failed to answer someone’s call for help no matter the hour. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, Vina, his wife of 55 years; children; Glen Jones (Mauriann), Thomas Jones, Carolyn Davis (Tom), Becky Degabriele (Gabe), Barbara Addington ( Mike Brizendine), Beverly Masse, Charlotte James, Patricia James, John Nelson James, Daniel Bolles (Debbie) and Larry Bolles; 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorial Service will be 12:30 p.m., Thursday, January 16, 2014, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Canon City.
