Mrs. Anderson, the former Anita Elizabeth Rusch was born August 6, 1917, on the family farm at rural Grand Mound, to William John and Augusta Catherina (Meints) Rusch. Following graduation from high school, Anita began nursing school at the University of Iowa, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in June of 1940. While there, she attended a lecture by Amelia Earhart and was privileged to visit with her at length. This was Miss Earhart's last known lecture prior to her fateful trip. While attending college, Anita met Herbert James Anderson. They later married on June 26, 1943, at Fort Leonard Army Chapel #10 in Missouri. While Herb was serving in World War II, Anita worked in the ophthalmology department at a Veteran's Hospital in Maryland. Post World War II, the couple moved back to rural Grand Mound and later DeWitt. Anita was employed as an ER Trauma Nurse at the former DeWitt Community Hospital for over 36 years until retirement. Herb preceded Anita in death on October 29, 1996.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt and was active in numerous activities with her husband in the Masonic Lodge. Anita also was a member of PEO Sisterhood, Beta Sigma Phi, Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society, Sigma Theta Tau Sorority of Nursing, and was a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni. Anita was a very dedicated Eastlawn "Round Robin" Girl. She was a extremely loyal Hawkeye fan (being a classmate of Nile Kinnick), never missing a game on television or radio. Anita was a very kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother who was proud of her German/Danish heritage. Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles, word searches, solitaire and collecting Teddy Bears. Her fondest memories were being a grandmother and taking vacations all over the United States.
