Stephen O. Mitchell – 83, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Wednesday, December 25, 2013. Born in Muncie, Indiana on May 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Omer and Euva Mitchell.

Stephen grew up in Muncie and continued his education at Purdue University, later received his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and then his PhD from the University of Indiana. He served his country during the Korean War as a commissioned officer with the US Army.

Stephen had a fulfilling career in higher education administration, most recently at Central Connecticut State University. Retiring in 1995, he and his wife Caroline have made their home in Duxbury. His many hobbies included gardening, model garden railroading, woodworking, creating stained glass and reading.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 43 years, Caroline Mitchell of Duxbury; his five children and their families that include 5 grandchildren; Stephen T. Mitchell of Midland TX, Leslie Mitchell of Altadena CA, Judy H. Mitchell of Gloucester MA, Daisy Mitchell of Minneapolis MN, and Jesse H. Mitchell of Denver CO.; 2 brothers, Joseph H. Mitchell of Everett WA, John P. Mitchell of Cape May NJ; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
