Grady Burfield, age 90, of Shelbina, MO, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at Salt River Community Care in Shelbina, MO.
He was born on July 2, 1923, at Tyronza, AR, the son of John Henry and Mary Vest Burfield. He was united in marriage to Opal Lucille Humble on September 25, 1942, in Dyess, AR. She survives.
Grady is also survived by two children, Donna Sue Morgan and her husband Bobby of Lentner, MO and Sandra Kay Estep and her husband Rev. James of Wentzville, MO; five grandchildren, Shawn Fifer of Shelbina, MO, Missy Klaus and her husband Mark of Imperial, MO, Justin Morgan and wife Kirstin of Lentner, MO, Matthew Estep and wife Joy of Frisco, TX and Michael Estep of Potosi, MO and three great-grandchildren, Austin (“Little Britches”) Fifer, Madelyn Estep and James Estep.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, V.L. Burfield and Wilmer Burfield and one grandson, Christopher Estep.
Grady served his country in the United States Army during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge in June, 1946. During his four years of service he received two bronze stars and was decorated with a Purple Heart. He worked for John Deere in Moline, IL for 35 years, retiring in 1970.
Grady’s great joy was his wife of 71 years, spending time with friends and family and riding in his old red Dodge pick-up truck. Grady and Opal were avid fans of Johnny Cash and he enjoyed talking of their friendship, beginning as neighbors in Dyers.
Funeral services will be held at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO, on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 11:00 am with burial to follow in Shelbina Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 27, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Funeral Home in Shelbina. Memorials may be made to Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
