Betty Basye, our beloved mother departed this world on December 20th, 2013 after a lengthy illness. Mother led an early life of limited means, but as with most children born on the frays of the Great Depression this was the norm. The challenges and struggles of Mother’s early life created within her an insatiable drive and determination. She thoroughly believed that through hard work and tenacity that life would be better. Following Mother’s graduation from Itasca High School, she left behind the grueling work of the cotton fields and began a forty-four year career at SouthWestern Bell Telephone Company, now AT&T. During her early years with SW Bell she married and had three daughters -- Julie, Peggy and Tina. Mother managed to successfully raise us while working in an era unsupportive of working mothers. Mother was part of the generation that paved the way for career advancement for many women at SW Bell. She was one of the first women to pass the stringent technical assessment at SW Bell. Passing the assessment provided the coveted opportunity to advance from a telephone operator into the technical field. Mother’s technical career fueled her desire for knowledge as well as her wallet. Mother was never one for wasting time on fun. In fact her motto was “if you have time for fun, you have time for work” because there was always something that needed to be done. When Mother was not working at SW Bell or raising three challenging, obstinate daughters, she loved to sew and mow her grass. Mama leaves behind three loving daughters Julie Austin and her husband Eric, Peggy Mote and her husband Karl and Tina Beettner. She is survived by her sister Jane Cathey and husband Tom, brothers Billy Basye and wife Lilly, Jimmy Basye and wife Martha and David Basye, six grandsons Kevin Mote, Clint Mote, Christopher Mote, Aaron Beettner, Casey Mote and Logan Beettner. Visitation is December 23rd from 5:00pm-7:00pm and the funeral service is December 24th at 10:00am. Both will take place at Clayton Kay-Vaughan Funeral Home in Itasca, Texas.
