Ernest G. Alston

Ernest Glasco Alston, 70, of Spotsylvania County passed away on Dec. 19, 2013, at Spotsylvania Regional Hospital.

Mr. Alston was born May 21, 1943, in Richmond, VA to the late Willie H. Alston and Rosa Crump Alston. He was a retired Amtrak Auto train Engineer. He was preceded in death by both parents and his brother, Harry D. Alston.

Ernest, “Ernie, EG, Mr. A, Papa Doc, Bubble T, Big A and the Great Ernest Alston” as he was affectionately called, was educated in the Richmond, VA Public Schools, graduating from Armstrong High School. He attended Boston University, Virginia Union University and John Tyler Community College.

Ernest retired from Amtrak after 29 years of service. He also worked for Reynolds Metals, leaving to work at Seaboard Coastline Railroad, which became CSX. He was one of the first African Americans hired as a group 2 clerk in Richmond for the railroad. In 1991, he switched over to VRE as an extra board engineer. He operated the Fredericksburg line trains #304 and #305.

Ernie was a member of Sixth Baptist Church in Richmond, VA; upon relocating to Fredericksburg, he joined Shiloh Baptist Church-New Site, and currently was a member of Third Mount Zion Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Ministry and the Men’s Choir. However, he remained very closely affiliated with all three churches and he attended each church on different occasions.

Ernest is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Judith Chandler Alston; son Jarrett E. (Glenda), Fredericksburg and a daughter Tracie M., Irving, TX, and one granddaughter, one devoted nephew/stepson, Shannon V. Mahone; three sisters, Beverly Johnson McConico (Wilbur) Pearland, TX, Frances Hart (Cleo), Catherine Johnson of Richmond; five sisters-in-law; devoted, Derith Hatcher of Richmond, Ruby (Bill) Williams, Viola Belfield, Mary Melvin of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Mae Evens of Brooklyn, NY; two special aunts, Fannie Johnson and Naomi Roberts of Roanoke Rapids, NC and a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his devoted Railroad family/friends; and his forever faithful companions, Duffy (Little Man) and Skippy.

A public viewing will be held Friday, December 27th from 5 to 8 p.m. His family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 27th at A. L. Bennett Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, VA. The funeral service will be held 11:00 am,Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Third Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 9132 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford, VA 22580.
