Don F. Avery

U.S. Veteran

Don F. Avery, 80, of Crawfordsville, passed away Sunday afternoon at Franciscan St. Elizabeth- Crawfordsville.

Mr. Avery taught history for 39 years at Crawfordsville High School, where he coached wrestling and was assistant football coach.

He was a member of First Christian Church, where he was an elder and deacon, charter member of Sugar Creek Kiwanis, and Past President of the Montgomery County Historical Society. He also was a member of the Indiana Retired Teacher’s Association and Elks.

Additionally, he worked security at the “500” and parked cars at the Covered Bridge Festival. He enjoyed fishing and was a strong believer in preserving nature.

Don was in the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame and Coaches Hall of Fame. He graduated from Connersville High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Ball State where he was All-American in Football and was a member of the Omicron chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma pledge class of 1955. He earned his master’s degree and administrative license from Purdue. He also served in the Air Force, stationed in Saudi Arabia. He achieved the rank of Captain.

Born April 26, 1933 in St. Paul, Indiana, he was the son of Edgar “Spooks” Avery and Fredonia Roach Avery. He married Janet Oyler at the First Christian Church in Crawfordsville on June 12, 1960. Survivors include his wife, Janet Avery; children, Matt and Mindy; granddaughters, Shelby and Grace Suitors; brothers, Charles and Louie; sisters, Diana, Leah and Sue, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 PM Wednesday at First Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 AM Thursday at the church, led by Pastor Keith Strain. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery North.
