Clayton Clarence Hartman, 88, of Moose Lake, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013 in Oakview Assisted Living, Moose Lake. He was born October 6, 1925 in Sartell to Clarence and Emma (Kowitz) Hartman. Clayton graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1943. Clayton was a WWII Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1943-1946. Following WWII, Clayton went on to attend St. Cloud State University, receiving a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education with a major in Physical Science, Chemistry and Biological Sciences in 1949. Clayton then attended the University of Minnesota and Wisconsin Graduate program in Secondary School Administration. Following college, Clayton was united in marriage to Florine “Bunny” Anne Spaniol on August 27, 1949 in St. Cloud. Clayton and Bunny moved to Moose Lake where Clayton began his teaching career at Moose Lake High School in the Science Department. In 1952, Clayton became the High School Principal where he remained until 1975. He then served as Assistant Superintendent from 1975-1979 as well as a teacher in the Science Department from 1978-1984. Clayton was also involved in the following organizations, Phi-Delta-Kappa Honorary Educational Fraternity (University of Minnesota Chapter); President, District 25 Principal’s Association 1955-1956; President, Moose Lake Lutheran Brotherhood in 1953; Commander, American Legion Post #379 of Moose Lake in 1958 as well as Chaplin from 1956-1957 and 1959-1962; Scoutmaster, Troop #180 of Moose Lake for 15 years; Boy Scout Troop Committee Chairman for 5 years; Secretary/Treasurer of Moose Lake Development Corporation for 20 years; Secretary of Moose Lake Commercial Club and Chamber of Commerce for 25 years; Carlton County Representative on the Iron Range Rehabilitation and Resources Commission for 4 years; President, Moose Lake Parent Teachers Association from 1956-1957; Summer Recreation Director of Moose Lake for 5 years; Mayor, City of Moose Lake from 1982-2004 (longest serving mayor in city history); Chairman, Moose Lake Coalition to save the Moose Lake State Hospital for 2 years; Community Education Director for the Moose Lake School District for 8 years; Coordinator, Moose Lake Kiwanis Key Club for 6 years; Board of Directors, Carlton County Salvation Army; Citizens Advisory Board, Moose Lake Correctional Facility for 15 years; charter member of Moose Lake Historical Society and Emergency Operations Director, City of Moose Lake from 1982-2004. In 2010, Clayton was a Moose Lake School District Wall of Fame Honoree.
Clayton is preceded in death by his wife, Florine “Bunny” Hartman and his parents.
Clayton is survived by 2 daughters, Debra (Erle) Steigauf of Bemidji and Christine Hartman of Moose Lake; 1 son, Clay Kim (Mavis) Hartman of Moose Lake; 2 grandsons, Isaac (Ashley) Hartman of Pine City and Aaron Hartman of Fort Brag, NC; 2 great grandchildren, Lucy Ann Hartman of Pine City and Wyatt Clay Hartman of Pine City; sister-in-law, Neva Boeger of Sartell.
