Donald T. McGuire, 84, of Latrobe, passed away peacefully Friday, December 13, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born August 27, 1929 in Whitney, a son of the late William J. and Annie (Iezzi) McGuire.
Don was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the United States Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, he was a Rural Mail Carrier at the Latrobe Post Office for 36 years, and also a part-time school bus driver for 25 years. After retirement, Don served as the Zoning Officer for the City of Latrobe. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Latrobe where he served as a Senior Funeral Altar Server and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was past president of both the Westmoreland Federal Employees Federal Credit Union and the Westmoreland County Rural Letter Carriers and currently serving as treasurer for both the Greater Latrobe School Authority and the Latrobe Municipal Authority.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Daniel P. Nolan Council #940 in Latrobe, and the St. Vincent Assembly # 918 Fourth Degree. He was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Latrobe Lodge # 907, a charter member of the Rolling Rock Detachment of the Marine Corps League, a member of the Thomas B. Anderson American Legion Post 515, the Disabled American Veterans Association, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division # 17, and a past member of the Westmoreland Democratic Committee.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Donald McGuire, a brother, Francis L. McGuire, and a son-in-law, Robert T. Tabb. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet (Akins) McGuire, his children: Carolyn M. Tabb of Potomac, MD, Donna M. Rosner and her husband John of Latrobe, Terrence W. McGuire of Latrobe, Ann M. Fust and her husband Michael of Ashland, VA, and Erin M. Rodgers and her husband Matthew of Latrobe, four grandchildren: Elizabeth M. Rosner, Timothy J. Rosner, Karen L. Lazar and her husband Adam, and Maura M. Rodgers, his sister Janet M. Richwine and her husband William of Tempe, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law: E. Marie Watson, of Peoria, IL, M. Bernadette Marshall of Canton, OH, C. Ann Beggs of Pittsburgh, Nira Akins of Derry, and Mildred McGuire of Latrobe, and brothers-in-law: Gerald T. Akins (JoAnne) and Stanley R. Akins (Joan), both of Latrobe.
Don’s family would like to express their most sincere thanks to Dr. Matthew Sulecki and his staff at Arnold Palmer Pavilion, Dr. Donald Jakubek and staff, the Excela Health Latrobe Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation staff, and lastly, the Excela Health Hospice and staff, especially Beth O’Neill RN, for all of their compassionate care and concern over the last several years. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 PM Monday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Tuesday in the Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home, Inc. 1500 Ligonier Street in Latrobe. Members of the Holy Family Holy Name Society will hold services at 5:45 PM Tuesday in the funeral home. Members of the Knights of Columbus Council #940 will hold services at 6pm Tuesday in the funeral home where the St. Vincent Assembly #918 Color Corp will stand guard from 6 until 7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Wednesday in Holy Family Church with the Very Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney VF as celebrant. Everyone please go directly to Holy Family Church. Private interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery.
