Roland L. Gelinas
WWII Veteran & Purple Heart Recipient
Mr. Roland L. Gelinas, 89, of Rockville, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Fox Hill Center. He was the widower of Mary (Nardoia) Gelinas.
Roland was born in St. Elie de Caxton, Province of Quebec, Canada on October 20, 1924, son of the late Ferdinand and Mary (Poudrier) Gelinas. At the age of 5, his family immigrated to the United States in Waterbury. He attended St. Anne parochial school and was a member of St. Anne Church. At 19, as Private First Class, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe with the 8th infantry, 4th Division and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After the war he worked at Gilford’s Super Market as General Manager of the produce Department and after two years he was employed by Seymour Smith Co. until his retirement after 20 years of service.
Roland leaves behind three sisters, Rose (Gelinas) Thomas of Texas, Lucille (Gelinas) Joubert and her husband John of North Carolina and Marguerite (Gelinas) Beardon of Florida as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife of 36 years, he was predeceased by four brothers, Wilson, Bernard, Lucien & Bernie Gelinas.
Arrangements: Funeral will be held Friday, 9:00 a.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway to St. Anne Church for a Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
