Lawrence Joseph George

Lawrence Joseph George, 64, of Chapel Hill, N.C., died Sunday, November 24, 2013, as the result of an automobile accident in Williamstown, Mass.

Born on August 18, 1949, in Pittsfield, Mass., he was a son of Lucille Fischer George and the late Lawrence Clarence George. A native of Dalton, Mass., he graduated from Wahconah Regional High School. He subsequently attended Berkshire Community College for two years before matriculating to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering technology.

Lawrence was currently employed at the Williams College Science Center as an Instrument Support and Electronics Technician. He previously was employed in a similar position in the chemistry department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He was an avid hiker, whitewater kayaker and cyclist. He was also a licensed amateur radio operator with a First Class Commercial Radio-Telephone license from the Federal Communications Commission.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Patricia Kenney George, as well as his son Joseph Thomas George, both of Chapel Hill, N.C.

He is also survived by his mother Lucille Fischer George of Kinderhook, N.Y.; his sister Marion MacPherson of Kinderhook, N.Y.; his two brothers Jonathan George of Shelburne Falls, Mass. and Douglas George of Deer Park, Wash.; and nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Mass for Lawrence George will be celebrated Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Sts. Patrick and Raphael Parish in Williamstown with a reception to follow. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Massachusetts office of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (www.madd.org/local-offices/ma) or Sts. Patrick and Raphael Church Building Fund,54 Southworth Street, Williamstown, MA 01267.
