Died Monday, November 25, 2013, at Saline Evangelical Home. He was born October 30, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio the son of Charles and Irene (nee Fitzgerald-Kennedy) Birdsall. On June 23, 1951, he married Helen Beatrice Wilson in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ted attended high school in Rocky River, Ohio. Following graduation, he served in the US Navy, receiving an Honorable Discharge. He began his college education at Kenyon College in Ohio, then transferred to the University of Michigan. Ted received his BSE (1950), MS (1952) and PhD (1966) degrees from the U of M. Professor Birdsall taught, guided graduate students and conducted research in the field of signal detection theory. Ted retired in 1996 as Professor Emeritus after 42 years of service to the University of Michigan. Ted was also very active in serving the parish of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ypsilanti. In recent years, he attended Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Whittaker Rd. in Ypsilanti. Survivors include the love of his life for 62 years, his wife Helen; six beloved children: Edward Birdsall, Michael (Susan) Birdsall, Peg (Jim) Kovas, Steven (Lora) Birdall, Patrick (Elspeth) Birdsall and Robert (Sandy) Birdsall; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ned Birdsall and granddaughter Kate Birdsall. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, December 2, 2013, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9425 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti, with Fr. Edmond Ertzbischoff as celebrant. Cremation will follow. Contributions in his memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Envelopes will be available at Janowiak Funeral Home in Ypsilanti where the family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and at the Church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass.
