Paul S. Johnson

U.S. Veteran

Paul S. Johnson, 89, formerly of Waterford, Pa., died on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Millcreek Community Hospital, Erie, Pa. He was born on August 10, 1924, in Morristown, N.J., a son of the late Paul S. and Josephine Carey Johnson. Paul attended Cranford Senior High School in Cranford, N. J. He left school to enlist in the U. S. Army and finished his education later in life. He served with the Army from March 3, 1943 to August 4, 1945. Paul was with the 106th Infantry Division, 423rd Regiment, Company K. During his service, he was a Squadron Leader at the Battle of the Bulge. On December 16, 1944, he was captured near S. Vith, Ardennes Forest. He was held prisoner in Stalag 9B, Bar Orb and Stalag 9A, Ziegenhain. Paul was liberated on Good Friday, April 1, 1945 on a stretcher. He received many service and good conduct awards and medals and was honorably discharged on August 4, 1945. Paul worked for the Cranford Police Department for 2 years and then had his own construction and remodeling business until 1970. He then moved to Hubbardton, Vt., and also lived in Brandon and Chittenden, Vt. He moved to Waterford, Pa., in 2001. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Paul said of his life, “I have always believed that God had His hand on me from the cradle to that day I shall see Him face to face.” In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death on October 14, 2012 by his wife, Magdalene M. Pflug Johnson, whom he married on July 20, 1946 in Garwood, N.J.; and a brother, Nelson P. Johnson, age 2. Paul is survived by two daughters, Bonita Barnes of East Haddam, Conn., and Paulette Brown and her husband Ray of Buford, Ga.; a son, Stephen Johnson and his wife Kathy of Clymer, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Saturday from 10 am until the time of the funeral service there at 11 am.
