Joel Gomillion age 80, died at his home Thursday, November 21, 2013, in Lockhart after a long battle with cancer. He was born January 1, 1933, in Walton County to Isaiah and Adelia Courtney Gomillion. Joel graduated from Paxton High School in 1952. He joined the U.S. Army after graduation and proudly served his country. He returned home and worked in wood production for 45 years working for International Paper Company and Pope-Jones Pulpwood Company and founded Tri County Timber Company. Joel was a 32 degree Master Mason. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent countless hours in the woods, lakes and ponds of Walton County and south Alabama. Joel loved fast pitch softball and the stories are endless of how talented a pitcher he was. He once pitched a perfect game in Germany in an all Armed Forces Tournament. His biggest legacy, however, is the immeasurable mark he left on his wife, children and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Known to them as Joel, Daddy and Paw Paw, he will forever hold a dear and precious place in each of their hearts. Joel was preceded in death by father, Isaiah Gomillion; mother, Adelia Courtney Gomillion; grandsons, Patrick Helms and Joshua Allen Martin; brothers, James Gomillion and Cecil Gomillion; sisters, Dora Mae Hobbs and Myrtice Kirkland.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years Gwen Fowler Gomillion of Lockhart, daughters, Kay Elam and husband Greg of Nashville, TN, Beratta Gomillion and Melody Platt of Seattle, WA, Melissa Holley and husband Mike of Lockhart and Karen Kimbro and husband Dewayne of Florala, son, Edward Helms and wife Dawn of Lockhart, grandchildren, Joanna Hadley and husband Jamie and Jessica Jackson and husband Jamie, Holley Jones and husband Dewayne, great grandchildren, Joshua Grissett, Kadana Jackson, Laken Hadley, Dalton Jackson, Cody Jones and Nicolas Jones. sisters, Mae Sauls and Lucy Hickox and husband Wiley of Yulee, FL and Jean Smith of Crestview and brother, Wayne Gomillion and wife Betty of Opp.
Funeral services for Joel Gomillion will be 10AM Saturday November 23, 2013 from Evans Funeral Home with James Pickron, William Tucker Aplin and Phil McMillion officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 PM at Evans Funeral home Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery with Masonic Rites by Glendale Lodge 225.
