Cary was born on October 9, 1924 in Smithville, Texas to proud parents, Carey Lee Henderson, Sr. and Virginia Dawson-Henderson. Cary grew up in Smithville, where he received his formal education, graduating from Smithville High School in 1942.

After high school, Cary enlisted into the United States Army, where he served his country proudly for three years during World War II and rose to the rank of Private First Class.

After receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1946, Cary decided to make San Diego, California his permanent residence, where he united with Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. S. M. Lockridge.

In 1949, Cary began working at the Pickwick Hotel as a General Cook and worked his way up in the occupation ladder to becoming a Chef. Cary, who was known for his hardworking ethics, was noted for his outstanding record of attendance of missing only one day of work during his entire twenty-nine years of exemplary service. Cary was also a dedicated member of the Gibraltar Lodge #58 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Cary married the lovely LaManda Crosby in 1950 in San Diego, California. They were happily married for sixty-three years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing and sports, especially football and baseball. His favorite teams were none-other-than the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Chargers which he was also a season ticket holder.
