Mr. Sammy Durwood (Shorty) Kees died Sunday November 3 at Twin lakes Care Center in San Augustine, TX. Shorty was born January 23, 1928 in Rocelle, LA. He proudly served his country in WWII in the U.S. Air Force Engineers, seeing action in Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Saipan and in Japan Building landing strips. He received three stripes and the Purple Heart for his service. He was a fourth cousin to Lieutenant General James Harold “Jimmy” Doolittle. Shorty made his career as a truck driver in the logging industry until his recent retirement. He is survived by Nephews Bruce Kees, and Floyd Kees and Niece Patricia Kees all of Vinton, LA, a sister Mollie Taylor of Olla, LA and his extended family, Thomas and Melinda Shoemaker, Mark & Marti Pearson and family, Crystal Shoemaker, Thomas Carl Shoemaker and Emily Grace Shoemaker all of Hemphill. A military graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday Nov. 5th at 2:00 PM in The Springhill Cemetery near Hemphill with Rev Rudolph Hennigan officiating. Services will be conducted by Forest Oaks Funeral Home of Jasper.
