Bertha M. (Muise) Carter, a lifelong resident of Reading, died October 31, 2013 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. She was 93 years of age. Bertha was born in Nova Scotia, Canada on November 16, 1919. She was the daughter of the late John and Sara Muise. She graduated from Reading High School and worked as a Clerk for Mawn & Mawn Attorney Office for many years. Bertha was a longtime and active member of St. Athanasius Church in Reading. Bertha was the beloved wife of the late James E. Carter. Devoted mother of Christopher J. Carter and his wife Sheila of Tewksbury. Cherished sister of the late Bernard Muise and Irene Harrison and loving aunt of Sharon Lockwood, Jeannie Parker, Thomas Cloutman and Dean Carter. She also leaves her devoted companion, her cat, “Bonnie”. Her funeral will be held from the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Monday, November 4, at 9:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Athanasius Church 300 Haverhill St., Reading at 10:30AM. Burial will follow at Forest Glen Cemetery, Reading. Funeral home visiting hours will be Sunday from 4-7PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Bertha’s memory to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House 320 Haverhill St. Reading, MA 01867 or the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701 Attn: Breast Cancer Research.
