Mr. James “Jimmy” Cox, Sr., age 88, lovingly known by his family and friends as "Jimmy," of Goldsboro, NC departed his earthly life on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro, NC.

James was born in Quincy, Florida on June 7, 1925 to the late Mr. Pete Cox and Mrs. Ada Robinson Cox formerly of Quincy, Florida.

After completing his education in the public schools of Quincy, Florida, he enlisted into the military.

Mr. Cox served his country in the United States Army during World War II. While on active duty he was awarded the following commendations: World War II Victory Medal, the US Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Also, he was authorized two overseas bars while in combat serving in France.

After serving in the military, he relocated to Patterson, New Jersey where he met and married Mrs. Irene Lewis Cox (daughter of Jacob and Polly Lewis of Pikeville, NC). They were married for over 56 years. To this union two children were born. After retiring as a machinist they relocated to Goldsboro, NC.

Mr. James Cox, Sr. was preceded in death by his son, Mr. James Cox, Jr.

Mr. Cox leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories to: his wife, Mrs. Irene Lewis Cox; two daughters, Shirley (David) Marshall, of West Orange, New Jersey and Jacqueline (Earl “Butch”) Lewis-Greer, of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, Robert Cox of Greenbelt, Maryland; his sister, Irene Albritton of Quincy, Florida; two grandchildren, Lyndsey Greer and Zuri (Sheila) Greer, all of Columbus, Ohio; special niece and nephew, Eldress Doris Lewis and husband, Melvin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A public viewing will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 South George Street, Goldsboro, NC from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. with the family present to receive other family members and friends.

Immediately following the viewing, the funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm. Pastor Janet Lewis Gibson will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Christopher Coley Cemetery, 2669 Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville, NC.

At other times, the family will receive friends and other family members at the residence in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The family and friends will assemble one hour prior, 10:50 a.m., at the residence in preparation for the funeral procession.

Flowers may be sent to McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 South George Street, Goldsboro, NC beginning on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
