Joyce Ann Slaven Hargett age 61 of Oneida, a longtime school teacher in the Oneida Special School District passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.Born in Scott County, Tennessee on January 26, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Herbert T. Slaven and Opal Slaven Phillips.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneida. She received her under graduate and Master’s Degree in Education from Tennessee Tech University. Joyce served for 28 years as an elementary teacher in the Oneida Special School District.
In addition to her father she is also preceded in death by one son, Brock Shaun Hargett; step-father, Glen Phillips; sister, Wendy Lee Slaven; four aunts, Virginia Carter, Thelma Vincent, Verta Harris and Helen Ruth Phillips; father and mother in law, Archie and Opal Hargett.
Joyce is survived by her husband Gerald Thomas Hargett; mother, Opal Slaven Phillips; three grandchildren, Alley, Ryland and Abury Hargett of Huntingburg, Indiana; two brothers, Lynn Phillips and wife Pam, Reid Phillips and wife Velva all of Helenwood; one sister Elaine DeSalvo and husband Dan of Oneida; two brothers in law, Rick Hargett and wife Marlyn of Fort Wayne Indiana, Ron Hargett of Merrillville, Indiana; one sister in law Polly Wiedemann and husband John of Greenwood, Indiana; four aunts, Freela Lawson of Brookville, Florida, Betty Phillips of Oneida, TN, Dorothy Slaven of Georgia and Norman Sellenrick of Grand Junction, Colorado; great nephew and niece, Noah and Allie Webb. She also leaves many numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Friends may visit with the Hargett family Tuesday October 29, 2013 from 6 p.m. until time of funeral service at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Knight and Dr. Doug White officiating. Music will be provided by Bro. Philip Kazee.
Graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday October 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Hazel Valley Cemetery.Serving as pallbearers: Jimmy Litten, Joe Cross, David Cross, Bob Harris, Jim Harris and Hertis Phillips. Honorary pallbearers: Bill Duncan and Johnny Griffith.
