Flanery, Richard “Dick” Ervin (92) of Ypsilanti, MI passed away peacefully Friday, 25 October 2013 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor, MI. Born 7 June 1921 in Kansas City, MO to Joe Ervin and C. Beatrice (Lungwitz) Flanery. Dick joined the U.S. Coast Guard in September 1941 and was honorably discharged in October 1945. He saw action from the helm of his Attack Amphibious Transport ship APA-25 the Arthur Middleton in the Aleutians Islands and Tarawa (1943), Kwajalein and Eniwetok (1944). Dick later transferred to duty at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, near Newport, Oregon, serving through the end of the war. Other employment included the Weather Bureau, Flight Dispatcher at PSA, Convair and GMATS and Property Management for the Univ. of Mich. Married to Grace L. Kersey in Auburn, WA on 29 May 1944 and they enjoyed 63 years together. He is survived by all four Children, Rick E. Flanery (Janis), Trudee Johnson (Franklin), Kim K. Flanery, Sandy J. Flanery (Pamela), 8 Grand Children and 13 Great Grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on 2 November 2013 at Janowiak Funeral Home in Ypsilanti, MI. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arbor Hospice.
