Maxine Mizell

Maxine Sophia Russell Mizell, born on January 3, 1931 at Canon City, Colorado, returned to her heavenly home on October 21, 2013, at Provo, Utah. She lived a life of grace and courage, marked by devoted and compassionate service to her family, her community, and her profession. A person of simple habits and tastes, she nevertheless understood the value of education as she became a Nurse and a beloved professor of Nursing, founding a Nursing program at San Antonio College, where she received many teaching awards and, ultimately, awarded emeritus status. It is impossible to overestimate her influence on thousands of nursing students. Proud of her Scottish heritage, she was a passionate believer in fundamental American values and volunteered many hours to political causes. She was a volunteer ombudsman for the Alamo Area Council of Governments, an officer the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge – San Antonio Chapter, an American Red Cross volunteer, a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and a member of the Lutheran community. She found her greatest pleasure, however, in her family. She is survived by her sons, Louis Lee Mizell (Carolyn) and David Lee Mizell (Laurel), and daughter, Karen Lee Mizell, her sister, Marva Jean Kelting, and grandchildren, Cassandra, Savannah, Brenton, and Brevin Mizell, Rachael Coletti (Matt), Erica Anderson (Shade), Emory, Kendall, and Collin Wogenstahl, and great-grandchildren, Naomi Crocker, Mia Coletti, and Cedar Anderson. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 10:00a.m., at the Harwood Funeral Home, 225 E. Main Street, Florence, Colorado. Interment will follow at Union Highland Cemetery, Florence, Colorado. Online condolences at harwoodfunerals.com
