U.S. Veteran

Enfield, NH – James “Jim” Michael Hunter of Enfield and formerly of Randolph, MA, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at the Genesis Healthcare Rehabilitation Facility in Lebanon, NH on Friday, July 19, 2013 surrounded by his family.

During World War II Jim was an E-6 (Technical Sergeant), serving with the US Army Air Force from 1942-1945. He performed Waist Gunner and Flight Engineer duties on a B-24 with the 15th Air Force, 485th Heavy Bomber Group (Squadron G 112th) based in Libya and later in Italy. Jim was a decorated combat veteran who took part in the Southern France, North Apennines, Balkans, Rome, Arno, Rhineland and North African Campaigns. For his service, Jim was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with seven battle stars, World War II Victory Medal and an Army Presidential Unit Citation. After his discharge he worked as a carpenter with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union, Boston Local #67 until 1985.

Jim was an avid reader who loved history and spent much of his time gardening after retiring.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Violet Hunter.

Jim is survived by his sons James and Robert Hunter and daughters Janet Casano, Carole Carroll and Nancy Tantillo; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canaan, NH. Burial will be private in Quincy, MA. Ricker Funeral Home & Crematory in Lebanon assisted with arrangements.
