Mildred (Millie) Byard, 92, of Bliss (Levering), died Thursday, October 10, 2013. Millie was born September 21, 1921 in Bliss, to Ruth (Cosens), and John Dow Mallory. She married Bruce Byard on March 2, 1939, and they began farming in Bliss. While developing their dairy farm Bruce worked on road construction all over Michigan, often Millie and the girls joined him. Bruce died March 31, 1969 and Millie continued to farm, converting to a beef farm. Millie was a lifelong member of the Bliss Missionary Church, she taught Sunday School classes and Bible School classes for many years. She especially enjoyed being a member of the Women's Society which kept her busy making quilts as well as baked goods and handicrafts. Millie developed gardening, food preservation, and cooking to a fine art. She is survived by children Donna Byard, Jacqueline (Charles) Cornell, Sally (Dean) Schmalzried, Faith Byard, Brian (Meg) Byard, and Bruce (Loretta) Byard, all of the Levering area; 13 Grandchildren , 5 step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 4 step-great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Faith Spierling of Levering, and Ann (Alvin) Eby of Alma. Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce (1969); son, Arthur (1996); foster son Frank Welch; siblings Ruby Marshall, Thomas Mallory, Mary Marshall, and Joyce Fay. The funeral will be held Tuesday, October 15 at 11 AM at the Bliss Missionary Church with Rev. David Forrester officiating. Prior to the service there will be a private family viewing from 10-10:45 AM. The burial will directly follow the service at the Bliss Township Cemetery, afterwards there will be a luncheon at the church hall. Arrangements were handled by Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey, MI.
