On Saturday morning, October 12, 2013, John Henry Catlin, Sr. passed on from life entering the gate of Heaven. He was born on January 13, 1947 in Atlanta, GA to Violet Lee Webb Catlin and Albert Merritt Catlin. In 1947, the family moved to San Diego, CA, where he received his formal education and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1964.
On June 28, 1966, John enlisted into the United States Army and served an honorable tour during the Vietnam War Conflict. His medals include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and Vietnamese Service Medal.
John dearly loved his mother who affectionately called him “Johnny”. Every Saturday he would spend uninterrupted, quality time with his favorite lady, Violet Catlin. At an early age, she introduced Johnny to the love of God. His relationship with the Lord carried on throughout his life.
On March 13, 1993, John united in holy matrimony with his high school sweetheart, Mary Villarreal.
John began his career at Food Palace and Luckys/Food Basket in 1968 and retired at Albertsons in 2005. After retirement, he and his wife, Mary, had the pleasure of caring for their many grandchildren, whom they dearly loved unconditionally. Throughout John’s life, his hobbies included bowling, karate, traveling, trips to the movie theater and attending ALL family and friends’ events. His ultimate goal was to win the California Super Lotto. Although his fantasy girlfriend was Beyoncé Knowles, the love of his life was Mary.
John was a kind and giving person who gave encouraging words to all that came in need. He was full of smiles and laughs. He was determined to stay strong no matter how many triumphs and obstacles he faced. He knew the battle was not his; he fought the fight, and finished his course.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Naomi Marie Catlin; grandmother, Mary Lucy Webb; niece, Sheila Bracks and sister-in-law, Mary D. Catlin.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife of twenty years, Mary L. Catlin; two daughters, Gina M. Crosby-Steele of San Diego, CA and Yvonne M. Crosby of Las Vegas, NV; four sons, Ivan D. Catlin of Northern CA, John H. Catlin, Jr. (Miranda), Joseph A. Catlin (Nikole) and Terry L. Catlin, Sr. (Terri) all of San Diego, CA; two brothers, Robert D. Catlin and Albert M. Catlin, Jr. of San Diego, CA; two sisters, Barbara J. Williams of Milner, GA and Mary Catlin-Meals of San Diego, CA; mother-in-law, Grace V. Soltero “Amazing Grace” of San Diego; daughter-in-law, Sabrina Catlin-Lewis of Atlanta, GA; fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
