Lifelong Chelsea resident and Medical Secretary, she passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Tuesday morning October 9th after a sudden decline in health. She was 90 years of age. Born and raised in Chelsea she was the beloved daughter of the late Henry F. and Josephine (Lepore) DeAngelis. She attended St. Rose Parochial School and was a graduate of St. Rose High School. She continued her education attending Burdett College in Boston graduating with an associate’s degree in business. In 1946 she married her sweetheart Leo Breda immediately after his discharge from the US Army. They remained in Chelsea to raise their own family. Affectionately known as “Jo” by her close friends, Jo worked outside of her home as a Medical Secretary at Chelsea Memorial Hospital on Bellingham St. and later at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was also a professionally trained dancer who enjoyed teaching with several local studios and was also an accomplished choreographer who helped with the production of local Minstrel Shows. She retired from the Hospital in 1988 after 40 years of employment. A devoted Catholic for many years she was a member of the former Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Chelsea. After the Assumption closing she has been an active communicant and supporter at St. Michael the Archangel Chapel at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea. As a Eucharistic Minister at the Chapel she helped distributing Holy Communion to residents at the Home. Jo enjoyed reading, traveling, attending dances with the former Couples Club and Square Dancing with her husband. Years ago she and Leo would take the “Snow-Train” out of North Station to New Hampshire for a day of skiing in the mountains. Her husband Leo passed away 9 years ago, since that time she continued with many of the activities she loved. Her devotion to her faith and husband were equaled by her devotion to her children, their spouses, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. To her progeny she was “Ma-Jo” or “Aunt-Jo”. Ma-Jo would surprise her family stopping by their homes bringing presents or necessities, something she felt could be useful or enjoyed by her family and those she loved.
She was the beloved wife of the late Emilio D. “Leo” Breda. Devoted mother of James H. “Jay” Breda and his wife Sherryl of Melrose, Karen Breda and her husband Charles Lucas of West Hartford, CT.
