Russell A. “Russ” Hanley, Sr., 79, of Portsmouth, died Friday, October 4, 2013, at the Edgewood Centre.
He was born in Saugus, Massachusetts, on July 6, 1934, the son of the late Arthur R. Hanley, Jr. and Mary (Ross) Hanley.
Russ served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He was the proprietor of Peverly Hill Garage formerly of Portsmouth.
Russ was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth, a member of Emerson Hovey Post #168, VFW, Frank E. Booma Post #6, American Legion, Loyal Order of Moose 444# all of Portsmouth and DAV Chapter #4 of Newington.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas Hanley of Richmond, CA, Russell Hanley, Jr. of Colorado Springs, CO, Paul Hanley of Raymond, NH, and Joseph Hanley of North Hampton; a daughter, Kathleen Kelby of Rochester; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson; three brothers, Everett Hanley of Rye, George Hanley of Lee, Robert Hanley of FL; two sisters, Evelyn George of Dover and Helen Bridges of Hampton; several nieces and nephews.
Russ was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne H. (Tardiff) Hanley, his son, George Hanley, brothers, William Hanley, Raphael Hanley, Arthur Hanley and sister, Mabel Caruso.
Visiting hours will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer Street, Portsmouth.
