Russell Eugene “Russ” Akers, Sr., 52 of Clayton, DE passed away in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.
Born on August 22, 1961 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of Thelma (Everett) Akers and the late Melvin Akers.
For most of his career, he worked in construction.
Russ, as he was affectionately known, loved drag racing, football, especially the Ravens and drinking a nice cold Mountain Dew.
He was truly a family man with his family being most important to him. He loved each and everyone one of them dearly and they meant everything to him.
Russ was a loving son, husband, father, brother and friend and will always be loved and dearly missed by many.
In addition to his loving mother, Thelma, he is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah (Johnson) Akers; five children, Russell E. Akers, Jr. and his wife, Kristen, Amy M. Paulson and her husband, Gary, Norman Welsh III and his wife, Marie, Damion Davis and Chelsea R. Akers; also survived by his sister Brenda Lee Sharpless, and three brothers Paul David Akers, Thomas Jackson Akers, and Richard Wayne Akers; and three very special grandchildren, Kiira Akers, Arianna Paulson and Sophie Welsh, as well as by many dear extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 am on Tuesday, October 8 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown where friends may visit with Russ’ family from 10-11 am and from 6-8 pm on Monday evening, October 7. Russ will be laid to rest in Hickory Grove Cemetery, near Port Penn, DE.
