August “Gus” Merton Ely, 81, of Honor, died Monday, September 30, 2013, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born August 18, 1932, on the family farm in Honor, the son of Archie and Eleanor (Pratt) Ely.
Gus served as a cook in the US ARMY from 1952 until being honorably discharged in 1954.
Gus retired from Honor Building Supply where he was the lumberyard manager for 26 years. Afterwards, he worked as a groomer for the Benzie Snowbirds for several years. Gus was a member of the Platte River Association.
In his spare time, Gus loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, going to garage sales and driving around. Most of all, Gus loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren.
Gus is survived by: his wife, Carol; 2 daughters, Sandra (Michael) Vincent of Benzonia, and Holly (Richard) Orlik of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 5 grandchildren, Shaun (Jaymee) Colon of Frankfort, Jackie Vincent of Benzonia, Michael (JJ) Vincent Jr. of Benzonia, Shania Orlik of Colorado Springs, and Kristopher Orlik of Colorado Springs; his great-grandson, Branden Colon of Frankfort; 2 sisters, Evelyn Evans of Portage and Patricia (Kenneth) Williams of Honor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Freshwinds Ministry Center, in Honor, with Pastor Chuck Towersey officiating.
The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home, in Beulah, is in charge of arrangements.
