Carthage - Leslie F. Card, 86, of 12350 Beartown Road, died Thursday, September 26, 2013, in the Emergency Room of the Carthage Area Hospital after being stricken at his residence.
Les was born in Beartown, Lewis County on July 19, 1927, the son of the late Leo and Gladys Wilson Card. He attended school outside of Carthage called the Squash Hole School. He worked for the Town of Wilna Highway Department many years ago. He has owned and operated Card Sand and Gravel business for over 50 years here in Carthage. He also developed and operated Card Recreation Park on outer South Main Street in West Carthage. A previous marriage ended in divorce.
Les was an exempt member of the Carthage Vol. Fire Department, BPOE Lodge # 1762, Carthage and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sportsman.
He will be remembered for his Red GMC pickup truck bearing his business name and the numerous homes, roads and projects he worked on throughout the North Country.
He is survived by his companion, Nancy M. Jones of Beartown, one sister: Leona Moselle of Great Bend, two brothers: Wesley Card of Lowville and Everett Card of Glenfield and nieces and nephews. His longtime companion, Jerelene J. Ventiquattro died on March 4, 2005.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 PM at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be on Saturday from 11.00am - 1:00pm at the funeral home.
