Pete M. Garcia passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on September 20, 2013. He was born in Bakersfield, California to Jose and Juanita Garcia.
Pete Garcia was a beloved friend, mentor and supporter of many in the Gilroy and Morgan Hill community. He never met a stranger and always shared a kind word and his warm smile. Many citizens of Gilroy and Morgan Hill will remember Pete as a campus supervisor for the Morgan Hill and Gilroy Unified School Districts. He touched so many lives and worked with many generations and thousands of kids from 1973-2011 and will be remembered by many Live Oak Students as "PANAMA PETE" or "Parking Lot Pete" while many Gilroy Elementary students of Rod Kelly, Las Animas, EI Roble and Mt. Madonna High School would just call him "GRANDPA". In his years as a mentor, he always believed that everyone was capable of being a great person; all it took was kindness, respect a good listening ear and a good support system. For many, Pete was often that support and if you wanted to leave the closed campus of Live Oak High School, you had to pay him with a cheeseburger from Carl's Jr. In addition to his work with the youth in our communities.
Pete was also a proud and dedicated World War II Veteran of the United States Armed Services. Pete served as a leader and Captain of the Honor Guard ofthe local VFW post 6309 in Gilroy for many years and was a LIFETIME MEMBER of the American Legion. Every opportunity to show the community what it meant to proudly serve; Pete would don his many medals, his hat and uniforms, during and Gilroy Event Opening Ceremonies or march through the streets of Gilroy with a wave and a wide grin. In return, the crowds cheered and smiled and called his name. Pete loved being on that MEMORIAL DAY PARADE route, and even in his later years when he could no longer walk the route, he still dressed up in his uniform and rode down the city streets in a shiny convertible with a wave and a smile for everyone he passed
Pete was a faithful Christian, loved going to church and Loved the Lord as he prayed for and with many people that needed spiritual guidance.
One of Pete Garcia's greatest accomplishments was his family that he loved and cherished: His beloved wife Lita; Daughter Elizabeth (Liz) Garcia and her Husband David Hernandez; Brother Valentin M. Garcia and wife Mercy of Bakersfield. He is also survived by his Grandchildren; Andrea Munson, Ericka Ruiz, Melissa Ruiz, Krystal Hernandez and Matthew Hernandez; Great-Grandaughter Haylen Rose; Many Nephews and Nieces, Great-Nephews and Great-Nieces and MANY MANY FRIENDS.
