William L. Sullivan, 91, Henderson, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Hospice Lucy Smith King Care Center.
He was born November 1, 1921, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, the son of Charles Blount Sullivan and Anne Litsey Sullivan.
He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. He was a graduate of Centre College and University of Kentucky College of Law, having practiced law for more than 60 years. Bill was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, where he served as a fighter pilot having flown P47s. He also won the World Speed Racing Championship in France.
He was a former Kentucky State Senator and on many occasions served as Acting Governor of Kentucky. Bill was a member of the Henderson Rotary Club. He was instrumental in founding Henderson Community College and served on its board for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Dorsey Sullivan, who died September 10, 2006; one son, John Charles Sullivan, who died January 11, 1998; and one brother, Charles Blount Sullivan, III.
Survivors include one son, William L. Sullivan, Jr., of Henderson; one sister, Lois Thomas of Versailles, Kentucky; one brother, John Sullivan of Harrodsburg, Kentucky; two grandsons, Charles Joshua Sullivan and William Zachary Sullivan and his wife, Amber, both of Henderson; one daughter-in-law, Dana Sullivan of Henderson; two great-granddaughters, Lillian Elizabeth Sullivan and Izabella Anne Sullivan; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. Father J. Edward Bradley will officiate. Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery with full military rites performed by American Legion Worsham Post No. 40.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Presbyterian Church of Henderson or St. Anthony’s Hospice.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Gadient, Keith Utley, Darrel Pfingston, Hans Hogberg, Dr. Pat Lake, and Senator David Boswell.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Henderson Bar Association and Henderson Rotary Club.
