Gail Hawthorne was born March 5, 1929 in Nebraska City, NE and passed away peacefully in his home in Palo Cedro, CA on September 8th, 2013.
Gail was the son of Milbert Henry Hawthorne and Ruby Irene (Alexander) Hawthorne and is survived by his wife, to whom he has been married to for 64 years, Beverly (Nelson) Hawthorne, brother Richard Hawthorne, sister Lynne (Hawthorne) Rodriquez, son Steve Hawthorne and daughter-in-law Lynn Hawthorne, daughter Donna Hawthorne Brunetti and son-in-law Robert Brunetti, daughter Charlmayne Hawthorne, daughter Kathleen Tedford and son-in-law Dean Tedford and son Chad Hawthorne, grandchildren: Anthony, Brian, Jessica, AJ, Amber, Wayne, Julia, Maci and Michael, great grandchildren: Jesse James, Jeremiah, Jennalee, Desdemona, Andrew, Trinity, Eric and Austin.
Gail lived in Nebraska until his family moved to Twin Falls, ID at the tender young age of five, where he started working in the bean fields, learned to drive a truck and met the first love of his life, farming. As a teenager in the 40's he reluctantly moved with his family to San Francisco, CA to help with the war effort.
In 1949 Gail met the next love of his life, Beverly Nelson, at the San Mateo skating rink and on June 24, 1950 they were married. Also in 1950 Gail and his brother joined the Army National Guard during the Korean War. After the military he joined the Palo Alto Fire Department and worked his way up to captain. He decided to take a break from fighting fires and go into business as a grocery store owner in Cloverdale, CA. He owned the Preston Country Store for two years before he sold it for $10 in 1963 and went back to fighting fires, this time with the Yuba City Fire Department. He was soon promoted to Assistant Fire Chief. In 1966 he joined the State Fire Marshal's Office as an Arson and Bomb Investigator, where he spent the rest of his career until he retired in 1985. Gail purchased a couple of acres in the Redding area and moved his family in 1975.
Gail and his family were very involved with the Shasta County Farm Bureau, Cattlemen's, 4-H, FFA, Our Lady of Mercy Church, Palo Cedro Riders, Oregon Trail Riders, Local Indians For Education, Shriner's, ECV William Morris Chpt #10, AmVets, Nights of Columbus, AFS and helping his friends and neighbors whenever he could.
There will be a visitation at Allen & Dahl Chapel in Palo Cedro September 12, 2013 from 3 pm to 6 pm.
The family will be having a rosary followed by mass at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church beginning at 6 pm on September 20th, 2013. The family will also be having a service at Allen & Dahl Chapel in Palo Cedro on Saturday, September 21st, 2013 beginning at 10:30 am with a reception potluck bbq to follow at the Millville Grange Hall until 4 pm.
