Mack R. Powell, age 74, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He was born on March 3, 1939 on the family farm in Benton County, Missouri, the son of Clarence and Nina Powell. Later came Mack's siblings: Jack, Joe, Ralph, and Jane.
Mack began his formal education at National School, walking 1 1/2 miles to the one room schoolhouse. Before he graduated from Warsaw High School in 1957, he was recruited by the MODOT Construction Division. Upon graduation, MODOT sent him to the University of Missouri at Rolla to be trained as a surveyor. Mack worked for MODOT for two years before he was drafted into the U S Army.
Mack had two children, Todd Randall and Alisa Janell. For the many years that Mack worked in Kansas City, the family made their home in Grandview, MO. Mack coached baseball, was an Indian Guides leader, and participated in many of his children’s other activities. In 1988, Mack married Viola Hardison. With that marriage, he inherited an extended step family which included 5 grown children; Malissa, Diane, Cyndi, Patty, and Mike. Over the years, the family grew with the addition of many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mack had a nickname for all of them and entertained the whole family with his insightful and humorous observations of their activities and remarks.
Mack was an avid reader who was interested in and knowledgable of history, current events, and a variety of topics. He has served on the Board of the National Cemetery for the past 15 or more years, working with others to make many important and lasting improvements. Travel, hunting, fishing, baseball, playing cards, raising horses, and gardening were a few of the things he enjoyed. His quick wit, jovial spirit, giant personality, and kind heart are a few of the things that will be missed by all who knew him.
Mack is survived by his wife of 25 years, Viola, his son, Todd (Vicki) Powell of Cabool, MO, and daughter, Alisa (William) Buck of Columbia, MO; step-children, Mike (Rhonda) Hardison of Independence, MO, Patty (Dean) Anderson of Quincy, MO, Cyndi Summers of Independence, MO, Diane (Steve) Smith of Independence, MO, and Malissa (Alan) Turpin of Independence, KS; siblings, Jack Powell (Linda Slover) of Sedalia, MO, Joe (Pat) Powell of Columbia, MO, Ralph (Diana) Powell of Warsaw, MO, and Jane (Randy) Telander of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Caide Buck, Cailyn Buck, and Kieran Buck, as well as numerous step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mack R. Powell will be held at 12:00 P.M. Saturday September 7, 2013 at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 10:00 until 12:00. Burial will be in the National Cemetery near Warsaw. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Cemetery or the Benton County Elks Lodge #2783 c/o the Reser Funeral Home.
