Ernest H.

U.S. Veteran

Ernest H. “Ernie” Boyce, Jr., 57, of Bear, DE passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Elsmere, DE.

Born on June 26, 1956 in Lake Worth, FL, he was the son of the late Jerry Maxwell and Laurella Ruth (Rawlins) Melrath.

Ernie, as he was affectionately known, graduated from Delaware Technical College, Stanton Campus, with a degree in Fire Protection and Safety Management.

He proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict in the U.S. Navy on the USS Dubuque (LPD-8).

He was a remarkable individual. His determination and zest for life never wavered when confronted with the many obstacles and challenges he encountered throughout his life. At the young age of 29, Ernie was involved in an accident leaving him disabled as most would say, for life. He persevered and overcame this challenge with fortitude and strength of mind. He will always be remembered as an extremely hardworking gentleman who worked hard for his family and was a dedicated and loving husband and father. Ernie will be dearly missed by his family and by those many friends and colleagues who were blessed to know him.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Penns Grove Masonic Lodge #54 and the Scottish Rite.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Penny.

Ernie leaves many wonderful and fond memories to his loving and dedicated wife of 25 years, Deborah (Lawson) Boyce; his four children, Keith, Heather, Kenny and April Boyce; Lew Melrath, who considered his pop; Lew’s daughter, Debbie; four half siblings, Jim, Buddy, Angie and Jerry, Jr., as well as by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Interment services will be held privately at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ernie’s memory to Melanoma Research Foundation, P.O. Box 759329, Baltimore, MD 21275-9329.
