Age 76, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013. Carl was born February 7, 1937 in Lansing, the son of Albert Mathias and Anne Gertrude (Snyder) Schafer. Carl was a man of Faith and Family. He served with honor in the U.S. Air Force and was proud to be an American Veteran. He was a firm believer in serving God thru charitable works and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 788 and Bishop Albers, Fourth Degree 0496. By trade ,Carl was a draftsman for Abrams Aerial Surveying and in his retirement years he enjoyed working as a Greeter for Wal-Mart. As a younger man, he enjoyed building stock cars, raising his own livestock and hosting weekend long pig roasts for all his family and friends. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Betty, wood carving, cooking, going to auctions with his son, Al and spending endless hours with his family. He will be remembered as a man who made the world a better place and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard. Surviving are his wife, BettyJane (Kirchen) Schafer; children, Carl (Ronda) Schafer of Alabama, Patricia (Michael) Schaefer of Dewitt, Albert Schafer of Lansing, Suzanne (Dale) Bassett of Lansing, Barbara (Joseph) Spagnuolo of Dewitt and Robert Schafer of Arizona; grandchildren, Carl, Lexie, Mary Catherine, Alivia, Alyssa, Emily, Lauren, Zach, Kayla, Joey, Samantha and Dexter and 9 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at the Catholic Community of St. Jude, Dewitt, with Rev. Fr. Robert Irish as celebrant. A private family inurnment at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery will take place at a later date. The family will be receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church and Wednesday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A rosary will be prayed Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus, Richard Council #788 in memory of Carl.
