Mr. Roy Herbert Grimes, age 80, of North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at The Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Grimes was born December 11, 1932 in Wilkes County to Spencer and Addie Malone Grimes. Roy attended Lincoln Heights High School. He served two years in the US Army in Germany and was honorably discharged in March 1955. After being discharged from the Army, Roy became employed at The Sealtest Dairy Company in Winston-Salem, NC, where he delivered milk to many families. In 1963, he moved to New York, became a cab driver transporting many famous people, including a regular passenger, Jackie Gleason. In 1966 he returned to North Wilkesboro and worked as a cook at the YMCA in Elkin, NC. He also was a cook working along with his mother at Wilkes General Hospital. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and always shared those things with his family, friends and doctors. Later on he took up painting as a profession, and painted many houses, churches and barns for neighbors, friends and family members. In 1981 he worked at the Wilkesboro Highway Patrol Office as a custodian for six years. In 1987 he worked for The Department of Transportation as a manager for the fuel dispenser area, until he retired in 1995. Roy joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at an early age. He received several awards for being a dedicated member and served on the kitchen committee, Usher Board and the Men’s Choir until his illness. He will be remembered as a man who loved God, very humble, loving and a great father and grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, loyal friend and neighbor. When we think of our Dad we are reminded of the scripture from Matthew 5:5, “But the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in abundance of Peace.” He was preceeded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Grimes in 2009; his sister, Frances Grimes Dodson and granddaughter, Paris Monique Grimes.
Surviving are his son, Lester McBride of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Maureen Grimes Thomas and husband Rick of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Marva Grimes of Wilkesboro and son Jeff Grimes of North Wilkesboro; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Arlene Brown and brother-in-law, Warren Brown of North Wilkesboro; two sisters-in-law, Margie Howell and Jeanette Dulin both of Wilkesboro; devoted cousins Lura Mae Grimes of Wilkesboro, Billy Vaught of Roaring River; a devoted nephew, Freddie affectionally known by his Uncle Roy as “Sam” and wife Sheila Dodson of North Wilkesboro; a special friend, Gloria Allen of Roaring River; his dog “Lil Bit”; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 o’clock Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. John A. Speaks, Minister John Roberts, Rev. James Clyburn Sr. officiating, and Rev. James Ferguson, Pastor/Eulogist. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock Friday night.
